Naomh Fionnbarra 3-10(19) Glen Emmets 2-8(14)
The Naomh Fionnbarra Intermediate recorded a good win over Glen Emmets in the 3rd Round of the Division 2 League at John Markey Park, Ballygassan on Sunday 8th April. Played in blustery, sunny conditions, Glen Emmets with the wind at their backs made the better start in the first half scoring a couple of points. The Barrs responded with a William Woods free. The Tullyallen men had more possession at this stage but the Barrs were defending stoutly as a team. Another Emmets point was cancelled out by a William Woods score from play. A long ball into the Finbarrs square caused consternation as in one swoop a Darren McConnon leap took Conor Grimes out of it and deflected the ball into his own net. McConnon made up for his error later on with a good catch and he battled hard throughout the game. The Tullyallen men tacked on 2 more points before half time. Once again Woods knocked over a point from a placed ball to reduce the deficit to 5 at the break. Half time score: Glen Emmets 1-5(8) Naomh Fionnbarra 0-3(3).
The Finbarrs upped the tempo at the start of the second half and created a goal chance that was palmed to the net by Jack Butterly. Further points followed via 2 Woods 45’s and a point from play by Eoghan Osborne giving the Togher men the lead for the first time in the game. The Emmets responded with a point which. The Finbarrs then had another purple patch as a long ball into the Tullyallen square was well fielded by Woods who in one movement turned and buried the ball into the bottom corner of the net. Woods was in the thick of it again shortly afterwards as he fielded another long ball but was fouled in the square. Bernard Osborne tucked away the penalty and a Hugh Osborne point gave the Barrs a 7 point lead.
The Emmets to their credit responded with a goal from Stephen Healy after a shot bounced awkwardly in front of the Barrs keeper Andy McCann. As the Tullyallen men tried to push forward the Togher men hit them on the counter attack for 3 well taken points from play, 2 by Eoghan Osborne and 1 by Woods. At the other end the Emmets scored a couple of frees. The Togher rearguard locked down and prevented any further goals to seal a well earned 5 point win.
