Division 1 League, Round 2
St. Brides 0-04 Newtown Blues 0-11
Newtown Blues dominated proceedings on Sunday afternoon from start to finish at Newtownstalaban to run out winners by seven points.
Aided with a very strong downhill wind, the county champion’s scored eight on the trot to lead comfortably at half time. The highlight been three frees from Ross Nally. The last of which was eight minutes in added time just before the short whistle blast. St. Brides eventually found the target when substitute, Cathal Mc Kenna, opened his sides account on thirty eight minutes. This was quickly followed by a Kevin Hearty point to narrow the gap to six but ‘The Reds’ struggled to find the posts after this. Ross Nally settled the ship for the hosts when he slotted over a free-kick on forty three minutes followed by another point from Kevin Carr.
Mc Kenna however added his second of the afternoon from a ’45. But any chance of a late comeback was quashed when Aaron Hoey was black carded on fifty minutes. This was for a challenge on a Blues player following what appeared to be a foul on him first. Another point by Ross Nally from the resulting free kick ended ‘The Blues’ scoring and the match as a contest. There was time, however, for Mc Kenna to grab another ’45 on the stroke of full time to bring his personal tally to three. The match ended with the scoreboard reading 0-11 to 0-4 in favour of Newtown Blues.
