Division 3B – Round 11
St.Nicks V Cuchulainn Gaels
After 3 home games, Gaeil Chúchulainn were back on the road, this time crossing the Boyne to play St Nicholas in Drogheda. A late 8pm throw-in on a sunny, warm evening for football, was played on a pitch in fine condition. This was a typical game of 2 halves with the crosswind possibly having a bigger impact than anticipated.
An Chéad Leath:
A bright start for the away team when Jody Keenan scored a point from the right wing in the 2nd minute. 6 minutes later Séamus McCabe burst through the middle, fed the ball to Ray Phillips, who tapped it over the bar. Sustained pressure from the Nicks followed as they pushed hard looking for a killer punch. However Martin Hynes held firm at full back with good cover from Peter Morgan and James Ward. On 14 minutes, Nicks pressure was rewarded with a pointed free. The Gaels midfield now started to settle and take control. On 18 minutes Brendan O’Hagan hit a point after working hard to create the opening. 2 minutes later Eoin McDonald, alert to the quick free, put Gaels 0 04 to 0 01 ahead. Jody added a free on 22 minutes after Eoin McDonald was fouled. 4 minutes later, Rammie Phillips made a fine catch in midfield before feeding Jody Keenan who hit a long ball to the troublesome Cian McDonald. Cian outpaced his marker before slotting home a crucial goal for the visitors. Nicks tried hard to close the gap before half time but great defensive work, particularly by the Gaels half-back line kept them out. Then just into first half injury time, Ray Phillips won the ball in midfield, evaded a couple of tackles before hitting the best point of the match.
Gaeil Chúchulainn 1 07
St Nicholas 0 01.
An Dara Leath:
The second half was mainly a rearguard action for Gaeil Chúchulainn as St Nicks tried hard to get back into the game. After just 2 minutes they had a great chance of a goal but the ball passed just wide of the right hand post. On 6 minutes Nicks got their 2nd point and then a 3rd from a free 3 minutes later. Gaels were on the back foot for the next 10 minutes but held firm. On 19 minutes a Ray Phillips point settled the nerves. 3 minutes later Ray was fouled and Jody Keenan scored the resulting free. Nicks now pushed all out for goals and on 25 minutes a close range free produced a fine save from Shane Hynes who managed to deflect it over the bar. 3 minutes later Nicks pressure led to a penalty which was tucked in the right hand corner. The score was now 1 09 to 1 04 after 28 minutes . With pocession now important, the ball was worked to Jordan Loye just inside the opposition half. A strong run before being fouled helped to kill the game as a contest. The Gaels were to finish the game in the Nicks half with Eoin McDonald winning a late free after being sandwiched by 2 defenders from a slightly higher weight division. Ray Phillips pointed the free with what was to be the last kick if the game.

The club would like to express our deepest sympathy to the family of Declan Keenan, Farm Road, Annagassan. Declan was a former player who won a McArdle Cup medal in 1971 and was part of the panel which lost the 1973 Louth Junior Championship. May he Rest In Peace.
The club would also like to express our deepest sympathy to the family of Eugene Shevlin, The Lynns, Annagassan. Eugene was a founder member of the club in 1957.
