St. Josephs 1-15, Na Piarsaigh 0-11.
The Joes collected two valuable League points in their quest for a play-off promotion place from Division when they came the through against Na Piarsaigh on a scoreline of 1-15 to 0-11.
Na Piarsaigh opened the scoring with a point in the first minute before and excellent cross field ball was finished by Conall Smyth for the equaliser. Robert Sansom had to be alert in the Joes goal when he was first to the breaking ball on 5mins. Scores were hard to come by and Conal O’Hanlon hit the target twice to put the Joes ahead by 3 to 1 on 12mins. On 12mins Eamon McCauley cut through the Joes defence and it took a full length save from Robert Sansom to deny the Na Piarsaigh danger man. Na Piarsaigh continued to create chances and two points from frees from Robbie Murphy and a third from Eamonn McAuley had them ahead by 0-4 to 0-3 on 23mins. The final six minutes of the half saw the Joes hit the target with five unanswered points with two each from O’Hanlon and Conall Smyth. Some fine goalkeeping from Damian McCrink in the Na Piarsaigh goal with three consecutive saves denied the Joes an opening goal, a point from Craig Doherty gave the Joes an 0-8 to 0-4 half time lead.
The second half saw the Joes continue where they left off with an excellent run by Conall Smyth that he finished in style before the same player added a second after a good build up to extend the Joes lead to six points. Na Piarsaigh replied with a 20m free from the boot of Robbie Murphy. Both goals had near misses with Na Piarsaigh keeper Damien McCrink denying David Mernagh and then Alan Lynch was on hand to intercept a dangerous Na Piarsaigh attack. The Joes were denied by the post when an Alan Quigley high ball was deflected goalwards by Conal O’Hanlon. Mark Larkin was on target from a 40m free for Na Piarsaigh before Craig Doherty setup O’Hanlon for a superb long range effort. Minutes later O’Hanlon landed a 40m free to leave the score at 0-12 to 0-6 on 45mins. In a sweeping move by the Joes, Conal O’Hanlon found Peter Brennan who finished to the net with a superb strike from an acute angle on 48mins. Na Piarsaigh narrowed the gap with points from Mark Larkin and David Boyle. Both goalkeepers again excelled in the closing minutes with McCrink denying Conal O’Hanlon with a point blank save and Robert Sansom brilliantly deflecting Robbie McCartneys’ rasping shot over the crossbar. The Joes added points from an Alan Quigley 45 and a 40m free with a final point from the excellent Conall Smyth. Na Piarsaigh finished the scoring with a final point from Mark Larkin to leave the final score at St. Josephs 1-15, Na Piarsaigh 0-11.
