Kilcoyne Stars for the O’Mahonys in narrow win over Cooley
The Sean O’Mahony’s Senior team had a narrow victory over Cooley Kickhams after an absorbing encounter on the Point Road on Tuesday evening. The home side got off to a flyer, kicking the first 4 points without reply, before Cooley settled into the game and replied with 3 unanswered white flags of their own. The O’Mahony’s lads used the breeze to their advantage to kick another 3 points before the break, to leave them leading at half time by 0-7 to 0-4. Both teams were struggling with the blustery conditions, especially in the second half, where many of the home team’s attempts at points were held up in the breeze while the Kickams saw quite a few shots sail across the face of the goal and tail off to the right. With 10 minutes to go, both teams had kicked 4 second half points each before Cooley equalized with a well taken goal. Straight away, from Kevin Brennans kick-out, the ball found its way to Ben McLoughlin on the edge of the square, who unselfishly offloaded across the square to Stephen Kilcoyne, who fired between goalie and defender with his right boot to restore the Dundalk lads 3 point advantage. The visitors did kick 2 more points with the aid of the breeze but could not manage another equalizer and O’Mahony’s held on for a well deserved, single point victory. As per usual the back line worked very hard as a unit in closing down space and turning over ball and Conor Martin won lots of primary possession in midfield, including two ‘marks’ in a row mid-way through the second half. Stephen Kilcoyne contributed another 1-4 while Ben McLoughlin fired over 3 points from play, and so it finished Sean O’Mahony’s 1-11, Cooley Kickams 1-10.
