In this second round Division 2 match Kilkerley on home territory held on at the death for their first points of the season. Joes assisted by the strong wind held a slender one point lead of 0-5 to 0-4 at the break.
The Joes were on the scoreboard in the first minute when Alan Quigley was on target from the left sideline. The Joes defence soaked up the early Kilkerley attacks and Jack Mulligan setup Thomas Smyth for a fine point. Peter Brennans goal chance for the Joes was called back for an illegal pass before a fine run by Craig Doherty setup Alan Quigley for a point and the same player converted a 13m free to put the Joes four up after 8mins. Kilkerley dominated the breaking ball and Tadgh McEneaney was on target with two pointed frees. A superb left footed strike from Thomas Smyth had the Joes ahead by three on 18mins. The Kilkerley inside forward line continued to threaten, Shane Lennons left footed effort drifted past the Joes left post and it took the combined efforts of Seamus Quigley and Shane McQuillan to clear the Joes lines when another attack threatened. Both sides had their chances with Alan Quigley denied by both the crossbar and the upright, Kilkerley on the other hand had points from a Shane Lennon 13m free and a superb point from 30m against the breeze by Tadgh McEneaney, leaving the Joes 0-5 to 0-4 ahead at the break.
Tadgh McEneaney had the sides level within two minutes of the restart. On 35mins an altercation between two players saw Kilkerley lose Ronan Mulholland to a red card and the Joes lost Jack Mulligan to a black card. Alan Quigley restored the Joes lead from a 20m free and despite the numbers disadvantage is was Kilkerley who took control with Shane Lennon collecting a long ball and firing over to draw the sides level. Two points from Tadgh McEneaney had Kilkerley ahead by 0-8 to 0-6 on 40mins. Minutes later the Joes cut through the Kilkerley defence and Adam O’Connor saw his rising shot skim the crossbar. Kilkerley exposed the Joes defence and three points from frees by Tadgh McEneany (2) and Shane Lennon had them in control by 0-11 to 0-7 on 48mins. Two points from play in quick succession by the Kilkerley marksmen of Lennon & McEneaney had six between the sides on 54min. The Joes revived their efforts with pointed frees from Alan Quigley & Craig Doherty before Shane Lennon pointed to leave Kilkerley ahead by five with minutes left on the clock. However the Joes battled to the end, Alan McKenna threaded his pass to David Kieran who crashed the ball to the Kilkerley net on 61mins to leave the final score Kilkerley 0-14, St. Josephs 1-9.
