Barbara raises £9855 for Macmillan Cancer Support
Barbara Rooney was surrounded by her family and friends on Thursday 9th November 2017 to present a cheque of £9855 to Macmillan Cancer Support. Karen Murdock, the secretary of the Newry Branch, was on hand to receive this generous donation. Karen was delighted to receive this fantastic amount of money and assured us that it would be used to provide the best possible support for those who are diagnosed with cancer. She praised Barbara in her fundraising efforts and in the events she held. When Barbara undertook to start her fundraising in September this year she didn’t imagine that she would raise this amount of money. She said “I have been overwhelmed by the response from people near and far. So many people have been and are being affected by this disease. It is so important to have support available and Macmillan Cancer Support can provide that.”
Barbara herself knows the importance of this support as she was diagnosed with Breast Cancer in July this year. This came as a major shock to her and her family. She has had surgery to remove her tumour and it currently receiving chemotherapy treatment. Even with all of this going on in her life she has put her energy into raising funds for a very worthy cause. She shaved her head and hosted a coffee morning and raffle in September. Barbara would like to thank all her family and friends for their support. She would also thank everyone, who donated money, came to the coffee morning, bought raffle tickets, sponsored prizes, and helped in anyway in raising this money.
