Sensational comeback by the O’Mahonys foils Ardee again
The Sean O'Mahony's Senior team pulled of an sensational comeback earlier this evening in their second game of this years championship, to overcome a 10 point deficit shortly before half time, before finishing the game 3 points ahead in a 6 goal thriller. Knowing whichever side won was through to the quarter finals, and a loss meant a relegation playoff, this match was championship knockout, and was played at full tilt throughout.
Big Conor Crawley fisted the first point of the day over his head from a long delivery, followed by 2 from Stephen Kilcoyne, before one each from Jonathon Connolly and a coolly taken effort from David Redmond, to leave the Dundalk Team 5 points to 4 up, half way through the first half. Then St Mary's suddenly seized control of the game, kicking 3 points in a row and followed them up with 3 goals in quick succession to take a 10 point lead. The lads from the Quay are nothing if not gritty and finished the half with 1 -3 without reply to cut the gap to only 4 points at the break. Liam Dullaghan, who had being just released out the field, won a breaking ball in midfield, found Jonathon Connolly on the wing, and he in turn hit a dangerous ball into the box which Stephen Kilcoyne raced onto it and rolled it into the corner of the net with his right foot, on the turn. Conor Finnegan and Stephen Kilcoyne raised 2 more white flags to leave a half time score of, SOM 1-9 Ardee 3-7. Early in the second half Conor Finnegan's quick thinking paid off when he fired a quickly taken free kick into the bottom left corner of the net to leave the minimum between the sides. Mary's registered 2 points to go 3 clear, but were to score only 1 more point on the night after that, the O'Mahony's lads suddenly clicking into gear, starting with well taken points from Liam Dullaghan and substitute Conor McGailey, before Stephen Fisher landed the point of the day from all of 50 yards out. Then Ben McLoughlin won possession in midfield, before finding Vinny Smith, who launch a high ball into big Conor Crawley, refreshed from his wee break on the sidelines, who managed to knock it past the keeper on the second attempt, after the first effort came back off the woodwork, to leave the Dundalk side ahead by 2. Conor Finnegan followed up with the last point of his 1-3 total, before man of the Match Stephen Kilcoyne fittingly raised the last white flag of the day, finishing with 1-6 in total, with only 1 point from a placed ball. This unlikely comeback left a final score of SOM 3-15 Ardee 3-12, in what was a very entertaining game for those in attendance.
