Last Saturday night in Dunleer the Sean O’Mahony senior team had a 1 point victory over Ardee St Mary’s in a low scoring battle which could have gone either way. Conor Finnegan kicked an early free of the ground for the Sean’s but it was the Mary’s who started of the first quarter with a lot of possession and pinned back our lads while scoring 6 points and should have had more on the scoreboard. Stephen Fisher stopped the rot with a great point from play, Keith McLoughlin then spilt the post, and again Stephen Fisher finished the half with too more great scores from play to leave only a point in it at half time.
The second half had plenty of wide’s from both teams, with intense pressure and tackling on both side, and only produced 6 scores in all, 3 each, but crucially the 3 pointer was scored the defending champions and that was the difference in the end. The crucial score came when Johathon Connolly gathered the ball 30 yards from his own goal, carried it over half the length of the field, before passing it to Conor Finnegan who floated an enticing ball into big Conor Crawley on the edge of the square who palmed it into the net. Conor Finnrgan kicked a neat point a few minutes later from the right wing and the flying Stephen Fisher raced through to kick his 4th from play before the end while Ardee could not steer a equalizer between the posts. This win means O’Mahony’s are through to the knockout stages on 2 points as Ardee have only 1 point after their 2 games.
Next Saturday night we play the Joe’s in Dowdallshill at 7.30 in our second match in the group to decide who finishes as winners and runner-up in the group.
