Sean O’Mahonys Club Notes July 3rd
The Sean O’Mahonys Community Fun-Day took place on Saturday the 1st of July, and despite the weather letting us down with a few showers, a good crowd of kids and adults alike enjoyed a great afternoon craic. Well done to all our underage players who took part in their blitz on the main pitch. Highlight of the day for most people was the ‘Dunk Tank’ where a few local cebel’s got toppled into a cold tank of water, well done to all involved and the club would like to thank all the volunteers and sponsors who helped out with the day. A great night followed on in Clarkes Bar for the adults with barbecue, music and games.
Our senior team came away from Clogherhead with a hard earned draw after a frantic battle in which we led for most of the game but were glad to come away with a share of the spoils in the end. After a good first half the men from the Quay lead by double scores thanks mainly to 1-2 from Stephen Kilcoyne. Already short a few players with injury, losing Conor Crawley and then Stephen Fisher before the changeover didn’t help the cause, although Barry Mackin did kick 3 crucial frees off the ground, after coming on midway through the first half. Stephen kilcoyne started the second half in the same fashion as the first, kicking 3 early points, all from play, with his trusty left boot. Dreadnot’s then began their comeback, first with 5 points before 2 soft goals in quick succession turned the game on its head. Our replies came Liam Dullaghan’s and Ben Mcloughlin’s second points of the game each, before Paddy Byrne equalized with time almost up.The home side then kicked what looked like the winner, with time running out for O’Mahony’s, but our lads showed that spirit we have become accustomed to in the last couple of years to earn a free just inside the 50 yard line. Up stepped Barry Mackin to float the ball over the black spot to divide the points and leave both sides rue their missed opportunities, yet glad they didn’t leave empty handed, after a thoroughly entertaining battle.
