Sean O’Mahonys Club Notes
Our Senior team had a important win away to Newtown Blues last night in the Div 1 league. On a cold evening for this time of the year, O’Mahony’s had another slow start, but this time it was into a very strong breeze. The Blue’s had a very strong start going 6 points up, 4 from frees from Ross Nally, before Pat O Brien launched a high ball into the square and Conor Crawley used large frame to know it into the net. Ben McLaughlin then kicked his first point from play, followed by a Stephen Kilcoyne free to leave the minimum between the sides. However the Blue’s responded quickly with a goal from John Kermode and 2 more frees from the boot of Ross Nally to leave it 1-8 to 1-2 at half time. The Blue’s kicked the first point of the second half, into the breeze before the lads from the Quay finally kicked off reeling off the next 6 scores, with 3 great point from play from Vinny Smith, Ben McLoughlin and Stephen Fisher before Ben McLoughlin latched on to a layoff on the 45 at full speed, before rifling into the top corner of the net. Stephen Kilcoyne finished a good move with a rare point with the right foot, before Conor Finnegan expertly landed a 45 between the posts to put our lads a point ahead. The Blue’s did respond with an equalizing free and then edged 1 ahead before Ben Mcloughlin kicked his 3rd point of the day, followed by Stephen Kilcoyne’s 3rd of the day to take the lead again. Ben McLoughlin turned provider this time, surging up the middle before laying off to Barry Macken who expertly finished into the net. The home team tried to manufacture a goal in the 7 minutes of added time but the Sean’s defense held resolute, and has to be satisfied with 2 more frees from Ross Nally to leave the away team 2 points ahead at the finish. Blues 1-13 SOM 3-9
