DKIT Sport Louth Junior Football Championship – Group 3, Round 1

Na Piarsaigh-Blackrock 3-13 Cuchulainn Gaels 1-15

Na Piarsaigh-Blackrock opened their Junior Championship campaign with a dramatic victory over Cuchulainn Gaels in Páirc Éamoin on Saturday afternoon, overturning an early deficit with a spirited second-half fightback that was crowned by two late goals.

The afternoon began disastrously for the Rock men, losing both Shane Roddy and Conal Shields inside the first minute after the pair clashed heavily contesting a ball. Cuchulainn Gaels capitalised immediately, with James Sharkey slotting the opener before Ciarán Murphy levelled from a free.

The Omeath side soon took control. Their direct running and sharp shooting yielded six points without reply, with Adam Sharkey showing his quality from range and Jamie Malloy clipping over two well-taken scores. By the 12th minute, Cuchulainn led 0-7 to 0-1 and looked in complete control.

Na Piarsaigh-Blackrock did find a lifeline through Murphy’s accuracy from frees and a David Boyle goal, which cut the gap to the minimum. However, the Gaels refused to panic, and with James Sharkey clipping a clever two-pointer and Adam Sharkey curling over another, they steadied themselves to push back out to a five-point interval lead, 0-12 to 1-4.

The second half began much like the first, with Adam Sharkey extending Cuchulainn’s advantage from a placed ball. But if Na Piarsaigh were to find a way back, they needed their talisman – and Ciarán Murphy answered emphatically.

The county man produced two stunning two-pointer frees within two minutes, on 38 and 40 minutes, dragging his side back into contention. With substitute James Mahoney adding a score, the deficit was cut to the bare minimum as belief swept through the Na Piarsaigh-Blackrock ranks.

The defining moment came on 48 minutes when Joseph Woods latched onto a pass and drilled a superb finish beyond Seamus Quigley to edge Na Piarsaigh-Blackrock in front for the first time.

Cuchulainn Gaels, to their credit, responded again. Rammie Phillips curled over and James Fealy fired another to restore their lead. But Murphy, nerveless throughout, struck a monster free for two more points before clipping over a ’45 to swing the pendulum back once more.

The killer blow arrived two minutes from time when substitute Matthew McAloon rose highest to claim possession before burying a low finish to the net. That goal put four points between the sides and effectively ended Cuchulainn’s resistance.

Murphy was simply outstanding, finishing with 0-11 (including three two-pointers) and orchestrating every attack. He was ably supported by Woods and McAloon, who delivered the crucial goals. At the back, Michael Woods and John Galligan steadied the defence after a shaky start.

For Cuchulainn Gaels, Adam Sharkey’s tally of 0-5 reflected his sharpness in attack, while James Sharkey’s creativity and Jamie Malloy’s energy were central to their dominance in the first half. Despite the defeat, their display will give them confidence going forward.

What it means

Na Piarsaigh-Blackrock will take huge encouragement from the resilience shown, especially given their early double injury blow. They now sit in a strong position in Group 3, while Cuchulainn Gaels must regroup quickly, knowing their performance for long stretches was more than competitive.

Man of the Match – Ciarán Murphy (Na Piarsaigh-Blackrock)

On a day when Na Piarsaigh-Blackrock were under severe pressure, Murphy stood tallest. His haul of 0-11, including three superb two-pointers and a vital ’45, dragged his team back into contention and ultimately over the line. Beyond his scoring, he led by example, constantly demanding the ball and lifting those around him. Without him, the comeback would simply not have been possible.

Turning Point – Woods’ Goal on 48 Minutes

While Murphy’s frees kept Na Piarsaigh-Blackrock alive, the game truly swung with Joseph Woods’ clinical finish midway through the second half. Up to that point, Cuchulainn Gaels had been edging every department and still led by two. Woods’ strike not only handed the Na Piarsaigh-Blackrock men their first lead but injected belief into the side and the crowd. From that moment, momentum shifted permanently, and Na Piarsaigh-Blackrock never looked back.
