PREVIEW: LOUTH V MEATH – ALLIANZ FOOTBALL LEAGUE

Preview: Allianz National Football League
Division 2 – Round 3
Saturday, 14 February 2026 | Croke Park | 17:00

Despite defeat to Cork last time out, there is no need for Louth to hit the panic button as they prepare to face Meath in Round 3 of the Allianz National Football League at Croke Park on Saturday evening.
With one win and one loss from their opening two fixtures, Louth find themselves in mid-table in Division 2. While that brings a degree of pressure as the Wee County look to sustain a promotion push, there remains plenty of time to build momentum at this early stage of the campaign.
As Gavin Devlin noted after the Cork game, performances are just as important as results during the opening rounds, with rhythm, cohesion, and squad development all key priorities. While victories naturally breed confidence — particularly with a new management team in place — Devlin and Peter Dooley will also be eager to continue expanding the depth of their panel throughout the league.
This stage of the season offers an opportunity to test new combinations and introduce emerging players to the demands of senior intercounty football. That process can bring mixed results, but it is a necessary step in identifying who is ready to make the transition from club or underage level to the senior arena.
That approach was evident in Round 2, with Tiernan Markey, Pádraic Tinnelly and Eoghan Callaghan all starting despite not featuring in last year’s Leinster Final, while Conall McCaul, Tadhg McDonnell and Sean Callaghan were introduced from the bench. It underlines the management’s focus on building genuine depth while remaining competitive in one of the most demanding divisions.
Injuries have also limited Devlin’s options in the early weeks of 2026. Vice-captains Tommy Durnin and Anthony Williams have yet to feature, while experienced campaigners Liam Jackson and Leonard Gray are continuing their recovery. None of the quartet are expected to return in the immediate weeks, although Emmett Carolan is should be close to making his comeback after missing the Cork game with a minor knock.
There is also a fitness race against time for 2025 Player of the Year Conall McKeever, who withdrew late from the starting XV in Round 2. Updated fitness news on all fronts is expected when Gavin Devlin addresses the media later this week.
While ideally a manager would prefer to have the majority of his panel available at this point in the season, the enforced absences have provided valuable opportunities for others to stake their claim.
With Meath collecting maximum points from their opening fixtures, Saturday’s challenge is a formidable one. However, a local derby under the lights at Headquarters presents Louth with the perfect opportunity to respond and reignite their Division 2 campaign.
