Agnew Inspires O’Connells as Late Surge Secures Semi-Final Spot

DKIT Sport Louth Junior Football Championship Quarter-Final
O’Connells 1-15 John Mitchels 1-10
Venue: Páirc Uí Taibh, Tallanstown
O’Connells booked their place in the semi-finals of the DKIT Sport Louth Junior Football Championship with a hard-fought but deserved five-point victory over John Mitchels in Tallanstown on Saturday evening. Played in front of a large and lively crowd, the match was delayed by 15 minutes due to thunder and lightning in the area, but the eventual action on the pitch was worth the wait.
From the outset, both teams set about the contest with intensity and determination. It was John Mitchels who struck first blood, Gareth Kane opening the scoring in the second minute with a well-taken point before John Gallagher doubled their advantage with a free on nine minutes.
However, O’Connells gradually began to settle, and their growing influence was epitomised by the tireless work of Jackie Agnew, who covered every blade of grass and drove his side forward at every opportunity. Robert Quigley settled the Castlebellingham men with two-pointer free, before Niall Conlon nudged them into the lead from another placed ball.
John Gallagher briefly put the Mitchels back ahead with a two-point free after an infringement of the three-up rule, but O’Connells replied in style. Evan Kearney landed a superb two-point free, Conlon added another from a placed ball, and when Agnew split the posts with a fine effort from play on 26 minutes, it summed up his growing dominance in the middle third.
By half time, O’Connells held a 0-8 to 0-5 lead, with Agnew’s tireless running and clever use of possession giving them a platform to build from.
The second half opened in similar fashion, with Quigley keeping the scoreboard ticking through frees in the 31st, 39th, and 43rd minutes. Evan Kearney then landed another excellent two-point free to stretch the O’Connells advantage to six.
John Mitchels, however, were not finished. Gallagher kept them in touch with frees before Tristan Knowles and Andrew Bingham chipped in with fine points from play. The momentum shifted dramatically in the 55th minute when Gallagher finished off a sweeping move with a brilliant goal, cutting the gap to two. And when Bingham struck an outstanding two-pointer on the 60th minute mark, the sides were suddenly level.
Just as Mitchels looked to have turned the game on its head, O’Connells produced the match-winning response. Substitute Andrew Sharkey pounced with a crucial goal in the 61st minute, firing to the net to restore daylight. Moments later, the irrepressible Jackie Agnew capped a superb individual display with another point from play, before Quigley added his seventh free late on to seal the victory.
In the end, O’Connells’ composure, strength in depth, and ability to strike when it mattered most carried them through to the semi-finals. The Mitchels battled bravely and will rue a couple of missed chances, but they ultimately came up short against a more clinical opponent.
