Louth Defy all the odds to down Armagh in Inniskeen

All Ireland SFC Round 2A
From Grattan Park, Inniskeen
Louth 2-20 Armagh 2-19
Few in attendance at Inniskeen could have imagined the dramatic finale that unfolded as Louth produced one of the greatest championship victories in the county’s modern history.
With normal time almost exhausted and the Wee County trailing by two points, their direct passage to Croke Park looked be slipping away. However, captain Sam Mulroy delivered a moment that will be talked about for years to come. Spotting an opportunity from almost 50 metres, the All-Star launched a speculative effort towards goal that dropped dangerously into the square and somehow found its way beyond Armagh goalkeeper Ethan Rafferty and into the net.
The final whistle followed shortly afterwards, sparking scenes of jubilation as Louth secured a place in the All-Ireland quarter-finals and claimed their first-ever championship victory over Armagh.

Mulroy’s late heroics capped another memorable afternoon at Inniskeen, a venue that continues to hold happy memories for Louth supporters. While the captain finished with 1-4, Dara McDonnell was immense throughout, contributing 1-3 from play in a superb attacking display. Ciarán Downey and young midfielder James Maguire also played major roles in a victory that few outside the camp had predicted.
The contest looked to be following a familiar script early on. Armagh struck for a goal inside two minutes through Gareth Murphy and quickly established control, moving 1-5 to 0-3 ahead after the opening quarter. Their pace and direct running caused problems, with Ross McQuillan particularly influential around the middle third.
Louth, however, gradually settled into the game. Seán Callaghan and Maguire began to gain a foothold at midfield, while the defence tightened considerably after the shaky opening exchanges. As confidence grew, so too did the scoring. Mulroy landed three first-half points, including a superb two-pointer, while McDonnell, Conor Grimes and Maguire all chipped in with important scores.
One of the moments of the half came from Downey, who danced through traffic with brilliant footwork before splitting the posts with a classy finish. Mulroy also produced a vital defensive intervention, clearing a goal-bound effort off the line as Louth seized momentum.
By the interval, the hosts had turned the game on its head and deservedly led 0-14 to 1-9.

Armagh responded strongly after the restart and levelled matters through Oisín Conaty’s goal. The Ulster champions then appeared to edge back into control, opening up a three-point advantage on more than one occasion through scores from McQuillan, Darragh McMullan and Jarlath Óg Burns.
Yet this Louth side has repeatedly shown remarkable resilience. A Mulroy free, won by the tireless Downey, reduced the gap late on and set the stage for an unforgettable finish. Then came the decisive moment as Mulroy’s audacious effort dropped all the way to the net, completing a stunning turnaround and sending Louth into the last eight amid extraordinary celebrations.
