We sat down with Bevan Duffy following the announcement of his retirement from inter-county football

How does it feel now that the decision to retire from inter-county football has been made?

Bevan: It’s a little strange but I’ve toyed with the idea of retiring previously and it never really felt right, but this time I feel it’s the right time for me walk away.

When you look back over the years, what does it mean to you to have represented Louth at senior level for so long?

Bevan: It’s been a privilege and an honour to play for Louth and it’s something I’m extremely proud of. Even in the dark days, when we were struggling in the lower divisions, I was always very proud to play for Louth.

You’ve seen a lot of change in Louth football since your debut — managers, players, even stadiums. What stands out most when you think of how far things have come?

Bevan: The level of ‘professionalism’ I suppose. The investment by the county board in the team, in Darver and now the stadium. The video analysis, nutritionist, sports psychologist, strength & conditioning etc. All that stuff has been invaluable in recent years and an integral part of our success.

Are there particular moments or games that you’ll always treasure from your time in the red jersey?

Bevan: My debut against Dublin in Parnell Park in the O’Byrne Cup. Beating Tipp in Semple in the league. My first win as Louth captain came in Croke Park against Laois. My brother played that day and it was a proud day for me and my family. The 2024 Leinster Final. But for me, the Meath games were always special and the games I loved to play in the most. Even early on, the 2 championship matches against Meath in Parnell Park were great occasions, despite the results not going our way. Turning them over in Navan in the league. The Championship game in Inniskeen was such an incredible day and occasion, not just for the players, but for the Louth fans. And obviously, the 2025 Leinster Final was one of the greatest days I’ve lived through. Leinster Final. Croke Park. Louth v Meath. 65000 people. Louth win. It doesn’t get much better than that. Stuff of dreams!

You captained and led by example for many seasons — what did leadership mean to you within the Louth dressing room?

Bevan: Being Louth captain was a huge honour and something I’m very proud of. For me, i just tried to lead by example. Lead by how I trained, how I prepared, how I handled myself on and off the pitch. I learned a lot from previous captains as well. Paddy Keenan was my first Louth captain and he was incredible. Not a big talker, but lead by example and showed up on the big days for Louth. Andy Mc was the same. And now Louth have Sam leading them, and Sam is a brilliant captain. Leads by example, shows up on the big days. Trusts his players. Delegates very well. Talks when something needs to be said.

You’ve lined out alongside and against some brilliant players — who were the biggest influences or toughest opponents you faced over the years?

Bevan: Gary Brennan from Clare was an unbelievable player. I was tasked with tagging him in a national league game in Drogheda and that was an eye opening experience. Brian Fenton, in my eyes, is one of the greatest GAA players ever. I learned a lot from Paddy Keenan in my early days with Louth. Dessie Finnegan too. Andy Mc was 2 steps ahead of everyone else.

Every career has its highs and lows. What were some of the toughest challenges you faced — and what helped you through them?

Bevan: My 2nd year as Louth captain was tough. We were a kick of a ball away from promotion the year before but we couldn’t get anything right the following year. I wasn’t happy with my form and that was something I struggled with. But I just kept plugging away, putting in the work. There’s no quick fix to that stuff, you just got to grind it out.

You’ve always been known for your professionalism and consistency. What kept your motivation so strong year after year?

Bevan: That group of players. I loved being a part of that group. Those lads mean a lot to me and as a group, we had ambitions. We wanted to make history.

How special has it been to share this journey with your family, teammates, and supporters — especially those from St Fechin’s and all across Louth?

Bevan: It wouldn’t have been possible without them. Simple as. Those moments on the pitch after big wins and are some of my fondest memories. Sharing those moments with my friends, family, teammates, supporters and club mates was so special.

You’ve played under many managers and in different eras — is there one that had a particularly big impact on you or on the team’s development?

Bevan: All my Louth managers had an influence. Aidan brought me into the setup for the first time and I quickly learned what was required of an inter county footballer. Colin had huge belief in me. Pete saw me as a centre half and I learned so much playing that position.. Wayne gave me the huge honour of being Louth captain and that’s something I’ll be forever grateful for. Mickey and Gavin had huge trust in me. And Ger had more faith and belief in me than I probably had in myself, and I took huge confidence from that. For the Fechins, I loved working with Eugene Judge. Old school, straight talker, demanding.

Now that you’ve stepped back from inter-county football, what’s next for you? Do you see yourself staying involved in GAA, maybe through coaching or mentoring?

Bevan: In the short term, my involvement will extend as far as the minis in the Fechins as my daughter is playing down there now. Long term, we’ll see. There’s a few things I’d like to tick off the list while I’m still fit and able.

Finally, Bevan, what message would you like to share with the Louth supporters who’ve followed your journey from the very start?

Bevan: Thank you. We’d had some great days in recent years and I’m proud to have played a part in them. A special thank you to the Louth supporters who were there in those dark days. Tipp in Semple. Sligo in Markievicz Park. Carlow in Portlaoise. Tough days but those days made the great days so much better.
