Anchor Tours Senior Football Championship Final Replay

Newtown Blues 0-12 St Mochtas 0-11

At Integral GAA Grounds, Drogheda

Ciaran Downey delivered a moment of pure magic to end Newtown Blues’ long wait for senior championship glory, firing over an astonishing two-point score deep into injury time to snatch the Joe Ward Cup from the grasp of St Mochtas.

The Integral GAA Grounds erupted as Downey’s magnificent effort from around 50 metres sailed between the posts and over the bar, completing a remarkable turnaround for the Blues and breaking Louth Village hearts in the cruellest fashion.

For a few fleeting moments, St Mochtas were on the brink of history, their first senior title within touching distance after a disciplined and determined performance. Instead, it was Newtown Blues, the county’s most successful club, who once again found a way to get over the line when the pressure was at its most intense.

There was plenty to make Downey’s winning score so memorable. The distance, the swirling cross-breeze and the difficult conditions were challenge enough, but the context elevated it into something truly special. After Final defeats in 2022 and 2025 and having been forced into a replay by last Sunday’s epic draw, the Blues were staring at the prospect of another heartbreaking afternoon before their talisman produced a finish that will live long in the memory of their supporters.

The drama was all the more remarkable given that the Blues had trailed by three points with the allotted time almost up. Jamie Kelly, inspirational throughout the course of the championship, ignited the comeback with a superb two-pointer before Downey stepped forward to deliver the knockout blow, sending the Drogheda faithful into delirium.

Conditions made fluent football difficult throughout, with persistent rain and a tricky cross-breeze ensuring that every score had to be earned. Both sides struggled for accuracy early on, but once Conor Moore opened the scoring for Newtown in the fifth minute, the contest began to settle into an absorbing battle.

Ciaran Downey added a point before Conor MacCriosta’ extended the Blues’ advantage, but St Mochtas responded through Declan Byrne and Gerry Garland, the latter landing a peach of a two-pointer in front of the stand to bring the sides level.

The teams traded scores in a tight opening half, with Downey continuing to influence proceedings for Johnny Clerkin’s men while Ciaran Byrne and Ben Goss Kieran helped the Mochs remain firmly in contention. Kieran’s point in the 16th minute gave St Mochtas their first lead of the afternoon, underlining their growing confidence in the difficult conditions.

Jamie Kelly nudged the Blues back in front before Declan Byrne converted a late free to ensure the sides went in level at the interval, 0-6 apiece.

The second half developed into a tense battle of kickouts and possession, with the Louth Village men gradually gaining the upper hand around the middle third. Byrne edged Kevin McClorey’s side ahead almost immediately after the restart, but Kelly replied to restore parity.

As the half wore on, the Mochs began to find another gear. Ben Goss Kieran put them in front again before Byrne converted a free to stretch the advantage. Ross Nally kept the Blues within touching distance, but another Decky Byrne free, awarded after a breach, gave St Mochtas a two-point cushion.

The momentum was now with the Louth Village men, particularly around the kick-outs, where Ciaran Byrne made a significant impact after being moved into midfield at half-time. His influence helped St Mochtas gain a foothold in the middle, and when Gerry Garland added a point in the 56th minute, the Mochs led by three and looked to be closing in on a historic triumph.

With just minutes remaining, their first senior championship title was tantalisingly close. They had absorbed everything Newtown Blues could throw at them and appeared to have done enough to secure the prize.

But championship football has a habit of producing moments that defy expectation, and Newtown Blues were not finished yet.

Kelly, who had been a driving force for the Drogheda men throughout, stepped up when his team needed him most, landing a brilliant two-pointer to cut the deficit to a single point. After a short period of going over and back, the Mochtas looked like they were going to resist the Blues.

Then came Downey.

With the clock deep into injury time and the championship hanging in the balance, the Blues talisman gathered himself from around 50 metres out. Andy McDonnell intelligently ships the ball back out to him. Against the swirling wind, he struck a magnificent effort that climbed through the rain and split the posts for two points.

The noise that followed was deafening. Blue jerseys surged in celebration as supporters struggled to comprehend what they had witnessed, while the St Mochtas players and followers were left stunned by the sudden reversal of fortune.

It was a fittingly extraordinary conclusion to a final that had already delivered a gripping draw seven days earlier. Last Sunday, a late Declan Byrne two-point free had forced the replay; this time, it was Downey who supplied the decisive late drama, his strike ensuring that the Blues would not be denied.

For Newtown Blues, the victory represents another landmark moment in the history of one of Louth’s great footballing institutions. They had been pushed to the brink by a courageous St Mochtas side, but their experience, resilience and sheer refusal to accept defeat ultimately proved decisive.

For the Mochs, the heartbreak will be difficult to take. They had come within seconds of a first senior crown and produced a performance worthy of the occasion, but they were denied by a piece of individual brilliance.

Full-time: Newtown Blues 0-12, St Mochtas 0-11.
