St Fechins Complete the Quadruple in Thrilling Senior Hurling League Final

St Fechins brought another outstanding season to a memorable conclusion when they overcame Naomh Moninne in an entertaining Louth Senior Hurling League final at the Cullen Auto Parts Louth GAA Training Centre, Darver, to complete a remarkable quadruple of titles.
In a contest that provided plenty of excitement, scores and drama, the Termonfeckin men showed their attacking quality and determination to emerge victorious by two points. Naomh Moninne pushed them all the way, producing a battling performance and keeping the outcome in doubt throughout an absorbing encounter, but St Fechins ultimately did enough to secure the league crown and add another honour to their impressive collection.
With both sides eager to finish their campaigns on a high, there was little to separate the teams in the early exchanges. Naomh Moninne’s Darren Geoghegan opened his account with a point before St Fechins responded through David Stephenson, setting the tone for an entertaining first half.
Geoghegan continued to pose a threat for Moninne, adding another point, while Mark Gahan also contributed to their tally. However, St Fechins possessed a potent attacking threat of their own, and Ronan Hackett soon made a significant impact on proceedings.
Hackett found the net to give the Fechins men a valuable boost, demonstrating the finishing ability that would prove so important to their eventual success. Paddy Lynch added a point from a free, while Stephenson also converted a placed ball as St Fechins sought to establish control.
Naomh Moninne refused to allow their opponents to dictate the contest. Conor Murphy found the net with a crucial goal, ensuring that the Dundalk side remained firmly in contention. Thomas O’Dwyer also registered a point, while Geoghegan continued to punish any opportunities from frees.
The exchanges were lively, with both teams finding ways through the opposition defence and making the most of their scoring opportunities. St Fechins continued to look dangerous going forward, and Hackett struck again for his second goal of the half, giving his side an important cushion at a crucial stage of the contest.
Sean Kerrisk added to the Fechins total, while Lynch maintained his accuracy from placed balls with further points from frees. These scores helped St Fechins retain the initiative, although Moninne continued to respond through the reliable Geoghegan, who added two further points from frees before the interval.
The first half had provided an excellent advert for hurling in Louth, with both sides showing attacking intent and a willingness to take the game to their opponents.
At the break, St Fechins held a 2-7 to 1-7 advantage. Despite having scored two goals, they had only a three-point lead, leaving Naomh Moninne very much in the hunt as the teams headed for the dressing rooms.
The second half began with St Fechins looking to extend their advantage, and they registered an early point from play. Their momentum continued when Darragh O’Gorman found the net, delivering another major score for the Termonfeckin side and strengthening their position in the final.
With St Fechins now having registered three goals, Naomh Moninne faced the challenge of finding a response if they were to turn the contest in their favour. To their credit, they continued to battle and refused to surrender their hopes of lifting the trophy.
Ciaran McKelvey registered a point for Moninne, followed by further scores from Mark Gahan and Thomas O’Dwyer as the Dundalk side worked to reduce the deficit. Eoin Murphy also added a point, keeping the pressure on the St Fechins defence.
Geoghegan continued to contribute to the Moninne cause, including a point from a 65, as his side searched for the scores that could bring them back on level terms. His accuracy from placed balls had been a feature of the contest, and he remained an important figure in their efforts to stay within reach of their opponents.
St Fechins, however, had already demonstrated their ability to find scores at important moments. Hackett’s goals had provided a platform for their victory, while Lynch’s free-taking and the contributions of Stephenson and Kerrisk helped ensure that the Fechins attack remained productive.
Although Naomh Moninne showed considerable resilience and kept fighting throughout, St Fechins ultimately held on to secure a hard-earned two-point victory on a scoreline of 3-9 to 1-12.
For St Fechins, the final whistle marked the completion of a superb quadruple, bringing a hugely successful season to a fitting conclusion. Winning a league title is an achievement in itself, but adding it to an already impressive collection of honours made the occasion all the more satisfying for the players, management and supporters.
Their performance in Darver reflected the attacking quality and determination that had carried them through their campaign. The three goals proved decisive in a close encounter, while their ability to respond whenever Naomh Moninne threatened ensured they maintained just enough daylight between the teams.
Naomh Moninne will be disappointed to have fallen just short, having contributed significantly to an entertaining final. Their attacking efforts, led by Geoghegan and supported by Murphy, Gahan, O’Dwyer and McKelvey, ensured St Fechins had to work hard for their victory.
Ultimately, though, it was St Fechins who had the final say. The Termonfeckin club can reflect on a remarkable season in which they secured four titles, with the Louth Senior Hurling League trophy providing another memorable chapter in their recent success.
Completing the quadruple was a fitting reward for their consistency and efforts throughout the year, and their victory in Darver ensured that St Fechins finished the campaign with another major honour to celebrate.
