Dundalk Young Irelands 2-16 O’Connells 0-14

Dundalk Young Irelands made an impressive statement of intent on Sunday afternoon as they opened their campaign with a deserved victory over Division 3 champions O’Connells in Tallanstown.

There was little between the sides during an entertaining first half, with both teams producing excellent scores. Jordan O’Donoghue, Dean Maguire and Derek Maguire were among those on target for Young Irelands, while Niall Conlon and Robbie Quigley kept O’Connells level at 0-9 apiece at half-time.

O’Connells were reduced to 14 players following the dismissal of Sam Shearman after 24 minutes, but they continued to compete strongly.

Young Irelands made the crucial breakthrough early in the second half when James Prendergast found the net after 35 minutes. Jordan O’Donoghue then added a second goal shortly afterwards, putting the Dundalk side firmly in control.

O’Connells refused to surrender and took advantage when Young Irelands were temporarily reduced to 13 players following black cards for Cian O’Donoghue and Conn O’Donoghue. Quigley and Conlon kept the scoreboard moving, but Young Irelands remained composed.

Peter Nixon, Liam McStravick and Dean Maguire added important late scores to secure a convincing 2-16 to 0-14 victory.

It was an excellent opening-day performance from Dundalk Young Irelands, who showed both attacking quality and composure under pressure. If they maintain this level, they will be serious contenders for a swift return to Intermediate football.
