Louth Under-17 hurlers win the Michael Feery Cup after their win over Monaghan
It was a first success in the competition for Louth, with some eye catching performances..
The Louth Under 17 hurlers rounded off an impressive campaign in the Celtic Challenge with a richly deserved 1-18 to 3-8 victory over Monaghan in the final at a sun baked Crossmaglen on Saturday afternoon..
The Louth lads carried the favourites’ tag into the decider having won 4 of their 5 groups matches -one of those victories came at the expense of the Farneymen.
After a cagey opening to the game, a Monaghan goal suggested this was going to be a battle – but Louth responded superbly, getting their own major through Senan Lundon to help them into a 1-9 to 1-6 interval lead..
Louth displayed the better skillset and in spite of conceding 2 more goals in the second half, did enough in front of the posts themselves to stay ahead on the scoreboard.
Right at the finish, the game turned ugly with referee James Clarke brandishing 3 red cards, 2 to Louth and one to Monaghan – but it in no way deflected from an excellent day’s work by the Louth team, and a major success for Louth underage hurling.
The Louth management team includes Senior stars Paddy Lynch and Ronan Mulholland, while also part of the set-up is Ronan O’Gorman.
The winning joint captains were Cathal Moynagh and Cormac Lundon.
Cathal Moynagh was named ‘Man of the Match’.
The Louth scorers were: Darragh O’Gorman 0-8, Senan Lundon 1-1, Cormac Lundon 0-3, Aidan Fitzpatrick 0-2, Stephen Curtis 0-1, Evan Corrigan 0-1, Kevin Plunkett 0-1 and Luke Haughey 0-1
