Louth have taken the direct route to this stage, taken two games to reach headquarters. A 4-18 to 1-24 win over Dublin in Round 1 reignited a summer that may have burned out after a disappointing Leinster exit. Gavin Devlin has referenced that Dublin semi-final as a huge turning point in this team’s story. No doubt, the team has looked completely different since. The Semi-Final in Portlaoise was an unusually flat performance from the Louth men. Gavin Devlin and Peter Dooley are shrewd operators and have used the intervening weeks to perfection which was shown at the Round 1 win over Dublin (4-18 to 1-24). The Round 2A victory over All-Ireland contenders Armagh (2-20 to 2-19) sparked headlines nationwide. Sam Mulroy’s buzzer beater goal threw the championship into chaos, so much so that Armagh have now been knocked out.
Monaghan’s Round 1 defeat to Mayo (2-20 to 1-24) was not such a downer for them as they fell just short after a comeback of epic proportions. They fired back two weeks later against Connacht champions Roscommon with a comfortable 1-20 to 0-14 win. Once again, Gabriel Bannigan’s men followed this up as they knocked out another provincial champion in Round 3 with a 1-28 to 2-19 win over Westmeath in Clones
