“Late Twist at Headquarters as Louth Fall to Meath”

Allianz National Football League
Division 2 Round 3
From Croke Park
Louth 0-22
Meath 1-20
Louth were left crestfallen in Croke Park on Saturday evening as a last-gasp two-pointer from Jack Flynn snatched victory for Meath in a dramatic Allianz Football League Division 2 encounter.
For the second time in as many weeks, Flynn proved Meath’s match-winner, booming over a late two-point score with less than a minute remaining to turn a one-point deficit into a one-point win. It was a cruel blow for Louth, who had produced a remarkable second-half turnaround and looked set to claim a famous result against their old rivals.
Having trailed by 11 points at half-time, Louth responded with immense character after the restart. Captain Sam Mulroy led the charge with four superb two-pointers in the second half, while former All-Star Craig Lennon added 0-4 in a powerful display as the Wee County stormed back into contention.
Lennon’s back-to-back scores edged Louth in front for the first time in the contest in the closing minutes, completing what had seemed an improbable recovery. But just when it appeared Louth had done enough, Flynn stepped up to deliver the decisive blow with what is fast becoming his trademark — a towering two-pointer from distance.
The tone for a fiercely contested derby was set within seconds of the throw-in. Referee Brendan Griffin halted play after just nine seconds following a melee at the Hill 16 end, issuing four black cards — two to each side (Sam Mulroy, Ciaran Downey, Sean Rafferty & Brian O’Halloran) — in an explosive start that underlined the intensity of the rivalry.
The first half proved hugely frustrating for Louth. After staying in touch early on, with Lennon and Mulroy keeping the scoreboard ticking, they were rocked by a devastating Meath scoring burst midway through the half.
Ruairí Kinsella’s 23rd-minute point sparked a dominant spell from the Royals, who went on a scoring blitz of 1-7 without reply to open up a commanding 1-14 to 0-6 lead. Meath seized control around midfield during that period, repeatedly disrupting Louth’s kick-out and converting turnovers into scores.
Kinsella struck the game’s only first-half goal in the 24th minute, slicing through the Louth defence after being played in by Mathew Costello.
There was a lifeline for Louth just before the interval when Ciarán Downey won a penalty after being fouled as he prepared to shoot. However, Mulroy’s effort was saved by Seán Brennan, leaving Louth facing an uphill task at the break, trailing 1-15 to 0-7.
With the aid of a strong wind in the second half, Louth emerged transformed. Mulroy converted two early two-point frees as they reeled off 0-6 without reply to ignite belief. Their intensity around the middle third improved significantly, and they began to carve open the Meath defence.
Meath struggled to regain control, managing just a single point in the opening 15 minutes of the half. Louth continued to chip away at the deficit, and two further Mulroy two-pointers from frees reduced the margin to the minimum entering the closing stages.
Lennon then stepped up with consecutive points to put Louth ahead for the first time, completing a stunning fightback that had the travelling support in full voice.
But in the end, it was heartbreak. With time almost up, Flynn launched one final effort from beyond the arc, splitting the posts to deny Louth what would have been a memorable victory.
Despite the result, Louth can draw considerable encouragement from their second-half display, which showcased resilience, attacking quality and leadership under pressure. On another day, the comeback would have yielded two valuable league points.
Instead, they were left to reflect on what might have been.
