Stalemate Sends Stabannon Through As Glen Emmets Come Up Short

Stabannon Parnells secured top spot in CTI Business Solutions Intermediate Football Championship Group 1 after a tense 1-9 to 1-9 draw with Glen Emmets at DEFY Páirc Mhuire, Ardee on Sunday.

The result was enough to send Stabannon through, while Glen Emmets knew they needed a four-point victory to leapfrog their opponents and reach the knockout stages.

Stabannon made the stronger start, racing into a 0-4 to 0-1 lead inside the opening 10 minutes. Sean Reynolds opened their account before Dylan Shevlin added a two-pointer and a further point, with Callum Wogan replying for Glen Emmets.

Cian Talbot Gaynor reduced the deficit for Glen Emmets, but Stabannon remained in control as Jake Corrigan, Patrick Reynolds and Shevlin kept the scoreboard ticking over.

The crucial moment of the opening half arrived when Harry Butterly found the net, giving Stabannon a commanding seven-point advantage.

Glen Emmets needed a response and they got one after the restart.

Keelan O’Neill began the revival with a point before converting from the penalty spot after James Butler’s goal-bound effort was stopped by a foot block from Bobby Butterly.

Stabannon steadied themselves with frees from Patrick Reynolds and Dylan Shevlin, restoring a five-point cushion with 10 minutes remaining.

But Glen Emmets wrestled the momentum back into their favour.

James Butler became increasingly influential, landing a two-point free before adding another two-pointer. O’Neill followed with a point and Butler then converted a late free to bring the Tullyallen side level at 1-9 apiece.

Glen Emmets had opportunities to complete the comeback and claim the four-point victory they required, but they could not find the scores needed to turn the draw into qualification.

Stabannon therefore advance as Group 1 winners with three points, with O’Raghallaighs finishing second on two points and Glen Emmets third on one.
